Amsterdam-based artist Niels ‘Shoe’ Meulman is began tagging ‘Shoe’ in 1979 and became a graffiti legend by age 18. In the 1980s, he met New York artists Dondi White, Rammellzee, and Keith Haring. Together with with Bando (Paris) and Mode2 (London), he formed the Crime Time Kings and strove to define the style of Europe graffiti. In the 1990s, he apprenticed under the Dutch graphic artist, Anthon Beeke, and later ran his own design company, Caulfield & Tensing, and was partner in the advertising agency Unruly. Shoe revolutionized the art of writing in 2007 with Calligraffiti, and his calligraphic paintings have been shown in countless international exhibitions and are part of several museum collections. Recently, he has evolved to a style of Abstract Expressionism with a calligraphic origin, which plays an important role in the new art movement Abstract Vandalism. Shoe painted at Atlantic and Greenleaf Streets — and countless other Easter egg spots — during Writes of Spring.
