ARTS & ACTIVISM 2018: Representation
The Second Annual WALL\THERAPY Conference
Visual Studies Workshop
July 28, 10am-6pm
31 Prince Street
Rochester, NY 14607
Free and open to the public—refreshments will be provided by Hart’s Local Grocers, Ugly Duck Coffee, Fiorella, and Scratch Bakeshop!
Following the theme of this year’s festival – “Representation” – the second WALL\THERAPY conference explores the connections between public art, identity formation, and collective belonging. Initiating a critical dialogue between participating artists, organizers, scholars, and the local community of Rochester, the conference will critically explore a set of themes, from gentrification and public space to pedagogy and youth agency, from identity and representation to inclusivity and intersectionality.
As WALL\THERAPY enters its 7th year (and 6th installment in the city of Rochester) the conference will take a self reflective-approach, inviting community members to voice their feelings about the murals and the effects/impact they have had on their neighborhoods.
Featuring:
+ Two keynote speakers: Prof. A. Joan Saab with a talk titled “Public Art, Public Discourse,” and RJ Rushmore with “Beyond Wallpaper: The Practicalities and Possibilities of Claiming Space”
+ Two artist panels with the 2018 WALL\THERAPY artists
+ Community organizers panel
+ Project Spotlight: Whose Streets? Our Streets! NYC 1980-2000

In two short weeks, we kick off WALL\THERAPY 2018!
This year, we wanted to focus on a more intimate experience for our artists, very much like our initial production in 2011 called “Visual Intervention.” The artist will be exploring themes linked to the concept of REPRESENTATION.
Vincent Ballentine, New York, NY
We are pleased to add that Nani’s selection was curated by our friends at O+ Festival as the beginning of a working partnership with their organization.
You can learn more about all of our 2018 muralists here.
We will also be holding our second annual Arts & Activism conference on Saturday, July 28 from 10am-6pm at the Visual Studies Workshop.
Save the date! We’ll be announcing the program and our guest speakers soon!
